USGS Scientist Honored by Natural Areas Association: USGS
scientist Charles Van Riper was presented with the Natural Areas Association
George B. Fell Award during their annual conference, September 20-23, in
Flagstaff, Arizona. This award represents the Natural Areas Association's
highest level of recognition and is awarded annually, in honor of the founding
member who dedicated his life to the protection of natural areas, to an
individual who has demonstrated the highest level of leadership in natural areas
stewardship. The award recognizes accomplishments that have significantly
advanced natural area preservation, protection, and management, and is presented
to an individual who has demonstrated the qualities of professionalism
exemplified by George B. Fell through his lifelong dedication to protecting
natural areas. The award also recognizes professional activity applied
toward stewardship of natural areas and the protection and understanding of
natural diversity. The Natural Areas Association works to provide support
and information services to those concerned with the preservation of natural
areas and natural diversity through members which include natural area managers,
stewards and conservationists working for public and private agencies or
nonprofit organizations, researchers, and educators.
